About Clos Fourtet

Located 40 minutes from Bordeaux, Saint-Émilion is a charming medieval village renowned for the quality of its wines and the majesty of its buildings. Perched on a rocky hill, legend has it that in the mid-eighth century a Breton monk named Émilion took refuge there in search of a place of retreat. Since then, its inhabitants have dedicated themselves to quarrying rock to build the city and, as a result, 200 km of underground galleries run through it. Limestone is everywhere and has shaped its identity and that of its wonderful vineyards. So much so that in 1999, for the first time in the world, a vineyard was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of the oldest wine estates in the historic village of Saint-Émilion is Clos Fourtet, a 1er Grands Crus Classés de Saint-Émilion where the current owners, Philippe Cuvelier and his son Matthieu, have been responsible for maintaining its status.

A member of the elite “Premiers Grands Crus Classés” of Saint-Émilion, they make Clos Fourtet, a red wine from a 20-hectare vineyard located at the top of Saint-Émilion, where the calcareous soils offer excellent drainage and the limestone provides minerality and finesse. Growing here are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines with an average age of 30 years, cultivated using organic and biodynamic treatments. Production is limited to only 40 hl/ha and the grapes are harvested by hand in small baskets to preserve all their intrinsic properties. Once in the winery, a minimal and gentle extraction is carried out and the whole berries are fermented in small capacity stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in a combination of steel, amphorae and barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for 14 to 19 months in oak barrels (50% new).

So, at the gates of the legendary city of Saint-Émilion and with an average annual production of 90,000 bottles, Clos Fourtet is an icon. A Grand Cru Classé B Saint-Emilion that enjoys world-renowned depth, smoothness and elegance.
