Biodynamic wine Certified
Sustainability and self-sufficiency of the vineyard certified.
Biodynamic wines are wines made with grapes taken from vineyards cultivated using the principles of biodynamic agriculture, a method of organic farming that is based on the sustainability and self-sufficiency of the vineyard. The most common techniques used in the vineyard for biodynamic wine include, allowing native flora to grow in the vineyard to prevent soil erosion, caring for wildlife and understanding that it too forms part of the vineyard, using animals to plow the fields, using animal manure as fertilizer, using biodynamic preparations to improve soil fertility and take into account the movement of the moon and stars to perform certain tasks in the vineyard such as pruning and harvesting. The main certification awarded to biodynamic Spanish wines is the Demeter classification.
To explain what they are, we need to start by talking about biodynamics and agriculture. Biodynamics, in biology, is a type of physiology that studies the life forces of organisms. It was scholar Rudolf Steiner who created the concept of biodynamic agriculture, which is a holistic approach to agriculture, i.e. Steiner considered farms and wineries as a whole, as a large complex organism where plants, animals and humans all exist together. And he established a series of principles to make sure all of these organisms could interact well with each other. Biodynamics also claims that the cycles of the moon have an influence on plants.
This is nothing new, but rather a rediscovery of the knowledge that comes from traditional agriculture. Our ancestors were very good observers and that is how they organised the cultivation and care of their land.
So what are biodynamic wines? The easiest way to explain it is this: these wines are made with grapes that grow in fields that are cultivated according to the principles set out by Rudolf Steiner. These are well-balanced and healthy vineyards where no chemical products are used. Instead, growers use healing plant preparations and natural compounds. The different phases of vineyard care, harvesting and winemaking are also carried out according to the lunar calendar (holistic vision, from beginning to end). Unlike natural wines, biodynamic wines may contain a minimal amount of sulphites.
Certified biodynamic wines have the “Demeter” guarantee on their label. This is the organisation who ensure wines are made following these principles.
