Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, the driving force behind ARPEPE and the head of the company, was a fervent wine enthusiast. However, Arturo also harboured another passion: car racing. So much so that his name has not only become synonymous with the history of Valtellina (in northern Italy) for his wine bottles, but also for his participation in the Coppa Valtellina Rally, a circuit that began at the Circuito dell’Inferno, a stage replete with sharp bends winding through vineyard slopes. Undoubtedly, a name well deserved. Arturo sought to merge his two passions: oenology and speed, dreaming of a wine that conveyed the adrenaline, power, roar, and thunder he experienced when racing down this tortuous path. Thus, in 2009, ARPEPE Inferno Riserva Sesto Canto was born.
Dante's Divine Comedy and its Sixth Canto of Hell inspired the name of this wine, which originates from the 13 hectares of vineyards owned by this winery, distributed across this area, including Sassella, Grumello, and Inferno. It is from the latter that most of the grapes are sourced. This particular plot is situated at an altitude of 450 metres, on steep slopes with rocky, poor soils where the vines must strive to absorb the necessary nutrients. Under these conditions, the work is inevitably manual and laborious (in terms of effort), even requiring the harvest boxes to be carried on shoulders. The steep incline and rugged terrain make it impossible for animals, let alone machinery, to enter the vineyard, making the viticulturists pivotal to all operations.
It is almost miraculous that the grapes reach the winery. The DOCG Denomination Valtellina Superiore Inferno is renowned for its reds, which manage to mature properly thanks to the south-facing orientation of this land. However, ARPEPE Inferno Riserva Sesto Canto is something quite extraordinary. Whether it is due to its extended maceration (86 days in wooden vats) or its extensive ageing of nearly three years in underground cellars, remains unknown.
ARPEPE Inferno Riserva Sesto Canto is the dream realised by Arturo Pelizzatti; and he shares it with the rest of the world through the nebbiolo. There is no grape with more character or more suitable to bring this dream to fruition. Everyone to their positions. Ready. 3, 2, 1... Go grab a bottle of ARPEPE Inferno Riserva Sesto Canto!
